Landfast sea ice in the Bothnian Bay (Baltic Sea) as a temporary storage compartment for greenhouse gases

چکیده

Although studies of biogeochemical processes in polar sea ice have been increasing, similar research on relatively warm low-salinity remains sparse. In this study, we investigated properties the landfast cover brackish Bothnian Bay (Northern Baltic Sea) and possible role mediating exchange greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) across water column–sea ice–atmosphere interface. Observations total alkalinity dissolved inorganic both column suggest that carbonate system is mainly driven by salinity. While high CH4 N2O concentrations were observed (up to 14.3 17.5 nmol L–1, respectively) 143.6 22.4 respectively), these gases appear be enriched compared column. This enrichment may attributable formation process, which concentrates impurities within brine. As temperature brine volume decrease, gas solubility decreases as well, promoting bubbles. Gas bubbles originating from underlying sediments also incorporated contribute ice. The fate merits further research, storage seasonal temporary.

Sea ice in the Baltic Sea e A review

Although the seasonal ice cover of the Baltic Sea has many similarities to its oceanic counterpart in Polar Seas and Oceans, there are many unique characteristics that mainly result from the brackish waters from which the ice is formed, resulting in low bulk salinities and porosities. In addition, due to the milder climate than Polar regions, the annual maximum ice extent is highly variable, an...

Remediation of a Eutrophic Bay in the Baltic Sea.

Eutrophication of coastal ecosystems is a global problem that often results in bottom water oxygen deficiency and in turn promotes sediment phosphorus (P) release (A). In order to increase sediment P retention, we injected dissolved aluminum into the anoxic sediment of a eutrophic semienclosed bay in the Baltic Sea, thereby inhibiting P recycling and further eutrophication (B). The P concentrat...

Envisat and the Ice Conditions in the Baltic Sea

In this paper the Finnish ENVISAT CAL/VALproject as well as some results obtained in the project will be presented. The project has three major objectives. One objective is to implement an operational data processing chain, the other is to analyze the effect of different ice properties on the SAR signature and its statistics mainly through empirical backscatter studies, and the third is to deve...

Linking Regional Winter Sea Ice Thickness and Surface Roughness to Spring Melt Pond Fraction on Landfast Arctic Sea Ice

The Arctic sea ice cover has decreased strongly in extent, thickness, volume and age in recent decades. The melt season presents a significant challenge for sea ice forecasting due to uncertainty associated with the role of surface melt ponds in ice decay at regional scales. This study quantifies the relationships of spring melt pond fraction (fp) with both winter sea ice roughness and thicknes...

Improving passive microwave sea ice concentration algorithms for coastal areas: applications to the Baltic Sea

Sea ice concentration can be retrieved from passive microwave data using the NASA Team algorithm or the Artist Sea Ice (ASI) algorithm, for example. The brightness temperature measurements obtained from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) instrument or the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS (AMSR-E) are commonly used for this purpose. Due to the coarse resolution of these instru...
